Piroska
By Patti Blake
This summer, I had the
opportunity to go to Moldova and Hungary with International Interns.
It was my second time and one of the most purpose-filled events in
my life. God showed me His power when I was weak and I would like to
share it with you.
On Monday morning, my third week of the trip, I had tried to get my
plane ticket changed to go home because I had just found out that my
mother had emergency surgery and I was needed at home. I could not
get on a plane so as you could imagine, I was very discouraged.
The team was ministering at Lake Balaton, a tourist location near
Budapest, when I met up with them. I laid low that day as the rest
of the team ministered through magic shows, music and literature.
It was very crowded and I noticed a woman sitting behind me reading
the material we were passing out and watching our team very
intently. I struggled with God, feeling very far from where I wanted
to be, but surrendered my will to Him and prayed for strength to go
and talk to her.
After grabbing an interpreter and scooting over three feet (could He
have put her any closer?) I began sharing the gospel with her. I
asked Piroska, the woman, if she knew where she was going when she
died, and she said she thought heaven.
We discussed our sin and she shared with me that she was divorced
and the man she was with that day, and living with, was not her
husband. She was concerned about this and I shared our loving God
and Father, who sent His Son to take away the sin of the world.
Piroska accepted the free gift of God through Jesus Christ and
received the assurance of eternal life right then and there. After
she prayed, I shared with her that God had a plan for her life
(Jeremiah 29:11-13) and that He intervened in my plans to bring her
to Him.
I was amazed how God divinely laid everything out in her life and
mine to bring her to that point and to teach me an incredible
lesson. He had been speaking to Piroska’s heart for a while, and she
said she had been feeling guilty about her living situation. He also
placed our team three feet away from her so that she could hear the
good news that day. God held me from getting on a plane so that I
could share this life-changing moment with her. He waited until I
was weak to show me that it was not me who led her to the Lord but
He, Himself. God is so good!
I heard it said that, “God doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies
the called.” I am not qualified to change people’s lives but God
calls me to spread His message so that He can change their lives.
Please continue to pray for Piroska that she will continue to seek
God and find one of the few Bible believing fellowships near her.
